Who is this guide for?

USA Faculty

What can this guide help with?

This guide will cover the use of the tool Kaltura in Blackboard courses, from the instructor perspective. Kaltura is USAHS' primary tool for recording and hosting audio and video content for use in Blackboard Ultra.

What is Kaltura Capture and My Media?

Kaltura Capture is the simplest way to record video for your courses. It is a desktop application can be used with your webcam and/or capture other things, such as Microsoft PowerPoint. Use Kaltura Capture to record your desktop camera and audio (i.e., presentation).

Media you record with Kaltura Capture can be found in My Media, your personal media library. My Media can be accessed directly from the Institution or Tools items in Ultra Base Navigation.

From the Discussion Response or Assignment Submission Text Editor in an Ultra Course

  1. Select the plus sign inscribed in the circle, and then select LTI item from the drop-down menu.
  2. Select the Kaltura Embed tile from the Content Market.
  3. Then, select Express Capture from the Add New drop-down menu. Remember, Express Capture allows you to make quick and easy recordings for discussion posts or assignment submissions, but it does not have the features or options that are found in the Kaltura Capture Recording Interface.
  4. Select the red record button when you are ready to record, and then click the stop button (white box next to the running time of the recording) to stop the recording. Then select Use This if you are satisfied with the recording, or select Record Again to start over and replace the recording with a new one. Finally, click the </> Save and Embed button when you are ready to embed the recording in the discussion post or assignment submission text box.

Adding Kaltura Media Content from My Media in Ultra

To add video or audio content from My Media in a document item in your Ultra course, refer to this guide: Add a Kaltura Video Quiz to a Course

Sharing My Media Content with Others

To share media from My Media with other faculty so it can be used in other courses, go to Tools in Ultra Base Navigation and select the My Media tile.

Identify the media item you would like to share. Click on the edit (pencil icon) option to the right of the media item.

When the media item page opens, select the Collaboration ribbon below the media item. Then, click the 'Add Collaborator' option.

In the 'Add a Collaborator' window, type the name of the person(s) you would like to share the media item with. It's best to enter the person's USAHS email address, if you know it. Select the permission level you would like the person to have (i.e., Co-Editor, Co-Publisher, or Co-Viewer) and then click 'Add'.

The person(s) you shared the video with will be able to see the video you shared in their My Media, which means they can add the video in one of their courses if they like.
